An iPad App Delayed American Airlines Flights

Planes get grounded for a number of reasons – last weekend, though, was because of an iPad app. American Airlines flight crews carry iPads now instead of the large kit bags they used to, but the airline had to delay many of its flights due to an issue with a software app on the pilots’ iPads used for manuals and maps. The solution was to push a new update out, but many planes had to return to the gates and establish a Wi-Fi connection in order to get the update. The situation begs the question: how important is it to make sure you have the latest version of an app installed? Are there other cases where it’s more important to be running the latest software versus being a version or two back?
